Everyone is entitled to a funeral service at their local parish church regardless of whether they attended church or not. Revd David will be pleased to help you through this emotional time as you plan the funeral service of a loved one.
Our ministers, either:
will be very happy to help you plan a funeral service including making suggestions for readings and hymns, if that would be helpful. The ministers are also there for you after the funeral has taken place to help you through this difficult time of your life.
Families who wish to arrange a cremation may decide to have the whole funeral at a Crematorium. The service would take place in the Crematorium Chapel and the coffin would remain there afterwards for cremation.
The church minister can lead the whole service at the Crematorium, or it’s possible to have part of the service at St. Nicholas Church and the Committal at the Crematorium.
Following a cremation, it may be possible to have the ashes interred in the churchyard at St. Nicholas as the final resting place for a loved-one.
Usually there is a service in St. Nicholas Church, and then the minister, the coffin and the family (and invited mourners) move to the churchyard for the burial. The minister will lead the whole service at the Church, which can include organ music, hymns, scripture, poetry as well as other music played through the church sound system. There is no pressure of time restrictions on a church service as with a service at a Crematorium.
There are Regulations and Guidelines set by the Diocese covering what is and is not allowed in a rural churchyard. Guidelines can be found by clicking on the link to the left. The minister will advise you on these Guidelines when you meet.
Although this is an emotional time, please take the time to read these Guidelines before deciding upon a burial or interment in the churchyard.
Each year in early November, we hold a service for the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed at St. George’s Church, Benenden. This is a service, within the benefice, which is one of remembrance and thanksgiving for all those who have died, whether recent or many years ago. At this service, we read out the names of loved ones and light candles in their memory.
